. Excuse the heavy breathing, that's some guy working out by the camera😂😂😂 . This is new client @kirby.xx doing her first ever 1on1 PT Boxing Session with me . She did really well, with nice body movement, punching from her chin, and kicking her heels out and twisting her torso as she shifts the weight from left to right to load each punch👏 . . Let's see if anyone actually bothers reading this 🤣 . At the beginning I let @emmachandi throw the punches and I purposely let her make mistakes; dropping her hands 😏 . This is because when people first start boxing, they are so worried about throwing the "next" punch, they forget about "finishing" the punch they're on (e.g. they don't bring the hand back to where it started from: the chin) . As a trainer, the way to correct this is to slow it down, hold one pad up at a time, and make sure each hand is re-set before starting to throw the next punch; the basics! . Once I slow it down, I then start to speed it back up, but this time with the hands going back to the correct position (the chin) . My coach drilled it into me that in boxing there is no such thing as a two, three, four punch combination. They are simply individual punches put together very fast, with minimal time between each punch, but they are still single punches . Too many people when starting boxing think it's a game to hit the pads as soon as they're held up, like that game in the fairground where you have to hit the thing that pops up with a hammer. This is wrong . The boxer punches the pad, when "they" are ready. It's not a race!! . Focus on punching as quickly as possible, but only once the previous punch has finished and the hand is back where it started👊 . It's not rocket science, but there is a science to it . . This won't mean much to a lot of people, but I am so proud of how @emmachandi has progressed over the last few weeks; what a difference!!!! . So, Emma is now moving her feet as she ducks & weaves, repositioning for the next punch. Shifting weight from side to side. She is keeping her hands by her chin when she rolls out and back in. She is keeping her hands by her chin when she throws the final two punches . I appreciate that to look at this it may seem simple, but I can assure you that it is not . Emma also keeps eye contact as moves out and in, ensuring that she knows where her opponent is, and more importantly, where their hands are👊 . This is textbook ducking & weaving and Emma should feel very proud of herself, and for me as a trainer, it's little things like this that make it all worthwhile for me. Very happy!! . . @emmachandi trying out the @hattonacademy Elite Combinations in only her 3rd 1on1 with me . She did really well, as she wasn't expecting this at the end of tonight's session👍 . These type of drills are training your body to move "instinctively" when certain shots are thrown at you; brain training 😁 . And Emma made a very valid point, off her own back, without any influence from me. She said that doing "Boxercise" in the past, where no attention was paid to hand position, weight distribution, correct movement / punching, has made learning to box correctly, all that more difficult😤 . Something I know myself, but it's nice to hear it from a client, impromptu!! . Well done Emma. . I can't really take any credit for coaching @thenikkieo as she is already an experienced Muay Thai competitive fighter . I know absolutely nothing about Muay Thai, and I don't pretend to either . However, Nikki has a passion for Western Style Boxing and in this drill I am teaching her how to block the most common three-punch attack in boxing; jab, cross, hook (the basics) . You can go with the high guard, but if you're an experienced boxer, you can pass the high guard (as shown in @john0d brilliant videos) . My coach has always taught me to block, catch, catch, counter...so that's what I'm teaching here . Simple, effective, and you throw one back at the end👊 . Remember a hook counters a hook, and most people drop their right hand when they hook, so if you spot your opponent dropping his right, let him hook you, catch their hook, counter hook - KTFO💥 . . @dumanandumber 2nd ever PT with me earlier today . When coaching new people I let them make a mistake, then repeat it to see if it was a one-off. When I am sure it's a "bad habit", I point it out - usually with a clip round the ear👊 . Funny how quickly they drop the bad habit😂 . Unless you're sparring and getting hit back, you'll never realise when your hands are no longer protecting you face, so as a coach I have to simulate the odd punch coming back . In this example Kenan was dropping his right hand when he hooks...something we all do, including me, even after 8 years of boxing!! . Once I pointed out that he was leaving himself exposed, he soon kept the right hand up when he hooks👍 . Quick learner and already is throwing a nice one, two, three - the most common combination in real boxing - once he works on the double jab, he'll have a decent little "moving forward" attack, whilst covering up as he throws them👊 . . Some of @pav14 doing another PT session with me tonight . Focusing on either single punches, or 2/3 punch combinations . Focusing on speed, power and footwork within each individual punch / movement . There's no rush in boxing. Practise single punches over and over and over for many years, get them right, then make the gaps between punches shorter and shorter - then you have what "looks like" a quick, powerful combination; in fact it's just single punches put together quickly and correct . Repitition is key . There's a time and place for fast flashy combos, but really they're just used for muscle memory. It's this kind of padwork that are the foundation for any boxer . I've just done a quick calculation and I believe I've thrown around 250,000 jabs with my own coach, over 8 years . My jab ain't too bad now. Pretty decent for my age, weight, injury list!! . But it's taken 250,000 times of throwing it to get it half decent!! . Video 2 and 3 are different attempts at the drill, trying to work on speed and make sure there is a distinct difference in all of the defensive moves🥊 . As I'm known for not praising people (@sophiemorg), I'll start with the positives; good understanding of what I explained re stance, shape, weight distribution👏 . Good step-in jab for a first session (this usually takes weeks to pick up)👏 . Good power on the right cross when sitting down on his punches👊 . Good power and technique on the hook when punching from the chin and twisting the left heel outward👍 . All very positive stuff👏👏👍👍👊👊 . Now for the criticism; need to pull hands back to the position they started before the punch. E.g., the chin (think piston) . On the right cross, don't lean forward with the punch; twist your hips, drop down 2 inches, and finish the punch with your right knee facing forward . On the left hook, halfway through you throwing them, I stopped and said throw it from the chin. Look at the hooks before and after I made that comment - chalk & cheese!! . Punching from the chin will always generate so much more power, whilst protecting your face from the counter punch . Overall a very good first session with the step-in jab and hook from chin being the standout punches👊🥊 . Here we are focussing on single punches; making sure the technique is correct, distance is right, and they are all individual punches . Remember in boxing every punch is a single punch .
