#nationalselfieday. Story behind the selfie: hat on my head because I’m covering the hair I’m taking down, still haven’t seen “Solo: A Star Wars Story”, (or ANY Star Wars movies for that matter) but I own 3 of these shirts because I Stan Donald Glover. My glasses are dirty. My son’s potty is in the background. I’m about to tear up this meatless chicken and sweet potato tots.
The shirt I wore for Father’s Day. It’s of me and my daddy when I was 6. The shirt reads “Forever your Tedda (my dad’s nickname for me), forever my daddy.” To those who lost their dad’s or who have absentee dad’s my heart goes out to you. To those of you with living fathers or father figures, cherish them.
You were far from the perfect father. You yelled, you sometimes said mean things, you were heavy handed, and sometimes you put too much pressure on me. But you also taught me how to ride a bike, celebrated my accomplishments, protected me the best you could, talked sense into me the best way you knew how, sacrificed your own comfort and safety to make sure I was okay, and you fought for me. You forgave me for when I was wrong, humbled yourself and apologized (not often) when you were in the wrong, you gave me the benefit of the doubt, you expanded my point of view and the way I see myself and the world, you encouraged my educational and artistic pursuits and passions, you stood by me even when you didn’t necessarily understand or agree with my choices, you gave me a reality check whether I wanted to hear it or not, and you did not relent or waiver even if my feelings were hurt by the truth. You inspired me, you astounded me, and you challenged me. You were far from the perfect father, but you the perfect father for me. I honor you not only today on Father’s Day, but for the rest of my days until we meet again. I love you daddy.
My #mcm goes to Lakeith Stanfield, John Boyega, and Kofi Siriboe. Three of the few Black men in Hollywood who have expressed appreciation, cherished, and recognize Black women. I appreciate you brothers. #lakeithstanfield#johnboyega#kofisiriboe
