Tulum, the site of a Pre-Columbian Maya walled city and a port for Coba, is one of the best preserved coastal Mayan cities in the Yucatan, in tandem with Chichen Itza and Ek Balam. Highlights of this archaeological site include the Temple of the Frescoes, which has spectacular figurines of the 'diving god.' #throwbackthursday Pictured here are glass bottle fragments recovered from the Richard Carter site (41BZ74). This glass has been heavily weathered, resulting in the patination of the glass via slow decomposition and corrosion from water and chemicals. This particular type of patination is sometimes referred to as "opalescence" or "iridescence". Often patination occurs on glass with high soda content, and can occur on bottles of any age, making it an unreliable way to date glass fragments (patination facts from The Society for Historical Archaeology, reference their Glass Bottle ID website for more info: https://sha.org/bottle/index.htm ) ____ This week's #siteoftheweek is the Richard Carter (41BZ74), one of the oldest historic sites in College Station! Richard Carter moved with his wife and family to College Station in 1831, after receiving a grant from the Stephen F. Austin colony, making him the first white settler in the area. The site was excavated by the ARC-TAMU, TAMU Anthropological Society, and local residents, in order to verify the presence of the Carter homestead and cemetery. Much of what was recovered from the site includes diagnostic mid-nineteenth century objects, including ceramic sherds, glass fragments, and metal fragments.
#funfactfriday! Our #siteoftheweek (Richard Carter site, 41BZ74) can still be visited today, commemorated by the Richard Carter Park here in College Station. Due to the popularity of the archaeological site, the College Station Parks and Recreation Department proposed the development of the park in 1985. In 1991, the graves of Richard Carter and family members were moved into the park itself from an adjacent site. If interested, you can visit the park which includes an interpretive center with displays about Richard Carter and his family! Check out the City of College Station - Government website for more information on the park: http://www.cstx.gov/index.aspx?page=547 ______ This week's #siteoftheweek is the Richard Carter (41BZ74), one of the oldest historic sites in College Station! Se ci riflettete è davvero sconcertante pensare che gli egiziani, i greci e gli indiani sapessero dell'esistenza delle cellule secoli prima dell'invenzione del microscopio. 🔬📚 #archeologia #archaeologist #archeology #microscope #science #discover #university #search #analysis #look #books #woman #girl #cultural #heritage #ceramic #study #tecnologia #technology
