@sundanceorg Film Festival winner THE MISEDUCATION OF CAMERON POST sees @chloegmoretz turn in a career-best performance as a teen sent to a conversion therapy camp in director, Desiree Akhavan's sophmore feature. Full #miff2018 program announced 10 July. See link in bio.
bisexual Iranian-American filmmaker Desiree Akhavan’s semi-autobiographical film APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR (2014) is a coming out story that doesn’t take itself too seriously. ——————————————————————— the way Akhavan’s character, Shirin uses self-deprecating humor as a defense mechanism really resonated with me. it also reminded me of the Australian comedian Hannah Gadsby’s newest stand up special, NANNETTE (2018). Gadsby says that all stories have a beginning, middle, and end, but in comedy, you only have a beginning and a middle, suspending the story at the height of narrative tension and laughing at it. sometimes we tell jokes because finding closure in our stories is too painful or uncomfortable. Gadsby’s special is a testimony to why we make art out of trauma and why that often isn’t enough. Shirin’s story, while told non-linearly, does have a beginning, a middle, and an end. she falls in love with Maxine, loses Maxine, and comes out (pun intended) on the other side, mostly unscathed. while these stories about navigating queerness and storytelling are quite different, I think they’re reaching at the same thing. telling our stories won’t resolve past trauma, but rather is a way of gaining control over the narratives of our lives and imagining future possibilities.
My copy of The Miseducation of Cameron Post arrived at Waterstones so another book for me to read for #pridemonth 🌈📚 I'm always on the lookout for more queer books and I've heard only good things about this, so I'm looking forward to reading it 😊 I can't wait for the film too! It's adapted and directed by one of my favourite women in film, Desiree Akhavan and stars the fantastic Sasha Lane (best known as the star of Andrea Arnold's American Honey) 🌈👬👭💕
A new international poster for the upcoming drama "The Miseducation of Cameron Post" has been released. The film, which will star Chloë Grace Moretz, Sasha Lane, Forrest Goodluck, John Gallagher Jr., Jennifer Ehle, Quinn Shephard, Owen Campbell, Marin Ireland, Kerry Butler, Steven Hauck and Christopher Dylan White, was directed by Desiree Akhavan (Appropriate Behavior) from a screenplay she co-wrote with Cecilia Frugiuele, based on the Emily M. Danforth novel of the same name. The film will follow "Moretz’s character as she is sent to a gay conversion therapy center after getting caught with another girl in the back seat of a car on prom night. The organization, run by a brother and sister played by Gallagher and Ehle, is supposed to help members repent for “same sex attraction.” Cameron forms an unlikely family with an amputee stoner, Jane (Lane), and her friend (Goodluck) in order to survive." "The Miseducation of Cameron Post" will be arriving in theaters on August 3rd, 2018. The Miseducation of Cameron Post July 22 | The Theatre at Ace Hotel DTLA | 7pm Tickets: Link in bio Desiree Akhavan won us over in 2014 with her hilarious feature debut Appropriate Behavior, and she brings her trademark wit and sass to this impressive follow-up feature. An adaptation of Emily M. Danforth’s celebrated queer YA novel, the film was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival for its warm, charismatic, and fearless performances. Set in the early 90s, the film follows lesbian teen Cameron (Chloë Grace Moretz, Carrie), sent to a religious conversion camp after she gets caught hooking up with her female best friend. At the camp, Cameron reluctantly undergoes various tactics used to “cure” same-sex attraction from persistent faith leaders Dr. Lydia Marsh (Jennifer Ehle) and Reverend Rick (John Gallagher Jr.), who are intent on “saving” LGBTQ teens. While some of the campers embrace the treatment, Cameron resists and instead forms an alliance with the rebellious duo Jane (Sasha Lane, American Honey) and Adam (Forrest Goodluck, The Revenant). The heartfelt bond shared among the three friends gives them the strength they need in order to rise up and live their truth. Akhavan’s unapologetically queer lens delivers a refreshing take on the troubling topic of conversion therapy (which is, to this day, still used in some states) while exploring the themes of self-love, identity, and chosen family, all with unexpected flourishes of humor. #outfest#outfestla#losangeles#lgbt#lgbtq#lgbtfilm#lgbtqfilm#queercinema#queerfilm#filmfestival#filmfest#film#queer #🌈 #themiseducationofcameronpost#chlorgracemoretz#desireeakhavan#closingnight#dtla#acehotel#theatreattheacehotel
