Last weekend, I watched my 52nd film directed by a woman this year! 🌟 I feel really lucky N.52 was such an amazing film like The Miseducation of Cameron Post directed by Desiree Akhavan, at my favourite cinema @homemcr . 🎟️⠀ ⠀ I'm proper chuffed it's only September and I've got my #52filmsbywomen for this year nailed, but actually I have a few more to watch in order to make it 52 *different* films to those I watched in 2017. Oh, what a chore... 😉 🎥⠀ ⠀ Luckily, Netflix has a (relatively) huge amount of female directed films I haven't seen, including the recently released The Land of Steady Habits directed by Nicole Holofcener, which I think will be next...
‘The Miseducation of Cameron Post’ (15) (Written and Directed by Desiree Akhavan) **** Montana, 1993. Cameron Post (Chloe Grace Moretz) and her best girl friend Coley (Quinn Shepherd) are discovered having sex on the back seat of a car on prom night. Appalled, Cameron’s guardian, Aunt Ruth (Kerry Butler), seeks help from the Church and Cameron is quickly referred to a Christian conversion camp out in the wilds of Montana known as ‘God’s Promise’. Here, brother and sister team Dr Lydia Marsh (Jennifer Ehle) and Reverend Rick (John Gallagher Jr) teach that there is no such thing as homosexuality and bisexuality, only sin against God. As the young people in their care struggle to repress their sexuality, Cameron and her new friends Jane Fonda (Sasha Lane) and Adam (Forest Goodluck) mount a quiet rebellion... Based on Emily Danforth’s 2012 novel, Desiree Akhavan’s film is a carefully considered critique of an appalling practice that seeks to drive young people to deny their own sexuality. Rather than demonise the adult ‘therapists’, Akhavan chooses to humanise them; Reverend Rick (a warm endearing performance from Gallagher) has barely resolved same sex attraction issues of his own and Jennifer Ehle’s Lydia is a long way from the Nurse Ratched she might have been. Akhavan’s approach is to quietly and calmly make the case for a total ban on this archaic practice rather than falsely claiming or exaggerating the evil at the heart of its proponents. A quietly rebellious film, calmly making the case against conversion therapy without recourse to histrionics. **** @themiseducationofcameronpost #desireeakhavan @chloegmoretz #sashalane#forestgoodluck#film#films#movies#cinema @ehle_jennifer @johngallagherjunior
Whilst everyone's talking about 'Boy Erased', I'd like to draw your attention to Desiree Akhavan's second feature 'The Miseducation of Cameron Post'. Both films tell a similar (in Cameron's case, fictional) story, exposing the cruelty of gay conversion therapy. However, despite winning the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance 2018, it took two months to find a distributor for Cameron Post; and you will still struggle to find this gem, showing only in a few independent cinemas. This film is as important as 'Boy Erased', and it deserves to be talked about. It is only Akhavan's second feature and she's already leaving her mark in terms of style. Beautifully shot, she invites the audience to try figuring out what thoughts are crossing @chloegmoretz's mind by using intimate closeups. Cleverly done, Akhavan treats a delicate topic in such a clever manner. The film never feels over-dramatic and she manages to make the audience laugh - in some scenes out of incredulity of what you are seeing and in other scenes due to the natural performances that Moretz, @sashablane and @forrestgoodluck gift us with. Overall, a thrill ride in which you'll find yourself one minute laughing and the next infuriated, exquisitely wrapped up. So please, do yourself and female filmmakers a favour, and go watch this essential film.
