Fun Fact n°194: Lucy Hobbs Taylor was the 1st American woman to earn a dental degree. She originally applied to medical school at the Eclectic Medical College in 1859 but was refused due to her gender. She then applied to dental school at Ohio College and was once again denied admittance because of her gender. However, a college graduate tutored her, which allowed her to open her own practice instead of trying to get into college again. In 1865, Ohio College of Dentistry finally decided to make women eligible to apply, so Taylor enrolled directly as a senior student and graduated in 1866.
