I love language. I love well-chosen concise words that express complex ideas. I love how different languages express the same concept in completely different ways. Would it surprise you then that I love dictionaries too? Especially multi-language dictionaries?! I was chatting with a fellow Instagrammer one day, when she told me that her first name was the Swahili word 'jaha'. Having never heard the word before, I had to look it up in my trusty Swahili-English dictionary. What a beautiful name to give your child! Today is Africa Day! In honor of the founding of the Organization of African Unity (now known as the African Union) on May 25th, 1963. 1963 was right in the middle of a great period in African history. Colonized states were gaining independence, the civil rights movement was strong in the West, and there was a movement of African Unity and Pan-Africanism. Sure, today we are not as strong and united as our freedom fighters and independence heroes envisioned, but we are getting there. And one way this is happening is through travel. As we get more curious about, and visit, other countries on the continent - whether for business, adventure, or pleasure - we are forging unity. In the Hausse family, we believe in the power of travel to break borders, to cross language barriers, to foster understanding, and to forge unity across the continent. As a family, we have visited 21 countries shown on the map with many more to go! Let us know which African country you rep. We'd love to change the greys into color soon!
