Remembering back to Catrin Huber's preview in The House of the Cryptoporticus in @pompeii_parco_archeologico 4 weeks ago... with fantastic opening speeches from Huber, @massimo_osanna and Madre’s Andrea Viliani. A real pleasure and super day. Funded by @ahrcpress and open till 15 Jan 2019. #expandedinteriors #romanarchaeology #painting #installation #contemporaryart
Crédits: Expanded interiors at Pompeii, Catrin Huber. L for Livia (Love, Life, Laugh,…) A silver bust of Livia, wife of Augustus. The portrait comes from the old sea shore of Herculaneum. Livia is portrayed as a powerful woman, wearing a laurel crown, which was something commonly associated with the celebration of martial virtues and used as a male attribute in Roman imperial contexts. The bust of Livia reflects notions and ideas about power as reflected in the official context of imperial propaganda. How is Livia portrayed by her Contemporaries? Any by our contemporaries? What do we see when we look at her today? Here's our replica of Livia scanned by our teams Digital Technology Expert Alex Turner and printed by #thinksee3d Ltd Photo Amedeo Benestante. #3dscanning #3dprinting #livia #contemporaryart #expandedinteriors #romanarchaeology
I for Isis Lactans (Interpret, Interfere, Integrate,…) A terracotta Isis Lactans. An Egyptian goddess, Isis was originally associated with mourning and funerary practices. This statue of Isis Lactans was found in 1936 at the first floor of shop 5, in the Insula Orientale, II in Herculaneum, and an inscription in Greek bears the name of the artist who made the statuette: Pausania(s) epoiesen. Statues of Isis appeared in various domestic contexts, they referred specifically to Egyptian cults, but they also joined other deities that populated the house altar. Who are we looking at today? Where can we find such empowered depictions of breast-feeding? #expandedinteriors #3dscanning #3dprinting #romanarchaeology #isislactans #contemporaryart #ercolanoscavi Photo: Amedeo Benestante
E for Egypt (Eternal, Ephemeral, Electrical,…) The realm of domestic worship was also quickly enriched by numerous gods and deities of foreign origin, such as Attis and Cybele, both of Eastern origin, together with gods and goddesses of Egyptian origin that have been found in numerous houses in Pompeii and Herculaneum. These diverse gods and goddesses lived happily alongside each other within the house altar. Here's our silver 3D printed Isis Lactans alongside @ercolanoscavi unicum in terracotta. #expandedinteriors #romanarchaeology #contemporaryart #ercolanoscavi #3dprinting
B for Beautiful (Bella, Bold, Brave,…) C for Courtyard (Casa, Care, Citizen …) Excavated by Maiuri between 1931 and 1938, the House of the Beautiful Courtyard also features an unusually large reception room that is decorated with beautiful late third-style wall paintings. Here's an external orthographic view from our scans by Alex Turner at #newcastleuniversity #ercolanoscavi @ercolanoscavi #3dscanning #orthographic #romanarchaeology #romanwallpainting #expandedinteriors
We'd like to share some of the Roman objects you’ll find replicas of in Catrin Huber's exhibition in Herculaneum: A for Ancestoral statues (Autumn, Asleep, Artisan,…) Two wooden statues. One is badly charred by the pyroclastic surge of Vesuvius, and the other features a head with a simple, rather graphic rendering of the facial features. The latter statue was found in a domestic setting (Casa del Graticcio di Legno) under a wooden bed together with parts of a house altar. Were these statues portraits of ancestors and thus part of the house altar? Or, were they parts from elaborate domestic furniture and interiors design features? @ercolanoscavi #ercolanoscavi #romanarchaeology #contemporaryart #expandedinteriors
Like Maiuri, Catrin Huber’s Expanded Interiors takes an experimental approach to exhibiting Roman objects on site, bringing contemporary fine-art practice into dialogue with the House of the Beautiful Courtyard, its history and its Roman artefacts. In 1956, Amedeo opened an Antiquarium in The House of the Beautiful Courtyard. Approaching the archaeological site as an ‘Open Museum’, he exhibited Roman objects found Herculaneum to give visitors an insight into the towns daily life. #ercolanoscavi #romanmuseum #contemporaryart #archaeology #romanarchaeology #ercolano #expandedinteriors
