Construction costs. This building was a home for old men and women who couldn’t take care of themselves anymore. I think it must have been quite an expensive project. In one of my old books about the city I found a bill of the pit. The pit has been dug in 1605. It was 69 meters deep . It took 9 men three weeks to accomplish it. And the price was 500 guilders. That’s only the pit, imagine the whole building. For those days it was a lot of money. Amsterdam was a wealthy city.
