- The red city of Ouarzazate, perched on a plateau with the Atlas Mountains framed in the backdrop, is also known as the gate of the desert. This ancient metropolis was mainly inhabited by Berber-speaking tribes, who built many of the prominent mud kasbahs. Hence, the fortified village (ksar) of Aït Benhaddou west of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And for hundreds of years, this secluded region of Morocco was only known to the camel caravans of the Silk Road, who crossed the desert laden with goods on their way to the more robust trade centres up north. But because of its well-preserved heritage the city became famous as the filming location of many high-profile movies including Lawrence of Arabia (1962), The Living Daylights (1987), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), The Mummy (1999), Gladiator (2000), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), among others. #travel#filmmaking#cliff#mountain#landscape#panorama#scenery#nature#photography
