Discovery! with Charles Lloyd, Roy Haynes or J. C. Moses, Richard Davis or Eddie Khan, and Don Friedman. This is a great record and a surprise from mid 60s Columbia. A few highlights: The track Forest Flower has Lloyd on Tenor and is a fairly straight forward hard bop melody but with more adventurous soloing than what you might expect from both he and Friedman. Little Peace features Lloyd on flute and is stark and atmospheric, evoking a sense of mystery or wonder. How Can I Tell You is soft and sentimental with beautiful airy soloing by Lloyd and a Bill Evans-esque contribution by Friedman. Lloyd invokes Coltrane at times, especially on the track Bizarre, but overall what I like about this album is that it’s comfortable with space, with chords that linger while still retaining emotion. Highly recommended.
