Kyoto, Japan: Kiyomizu-dera —————————————————————————— This UNESCO world heritage site is a 10 min walk through the Gion district. The structure of the main temple sits on the side of a steep slope and is supported by numerous large wooden beams, propping up the temple. The roof of the main temple is being replaced with construction scheduled to finish in 2020. Unfortunately this means I didn’t get to see the actual main temple from the outside. (you can still go inside!) —————————————————————————— There were a few large groups of middle-school kids visiting the Kiyomizu-dera when I was there. It appears that one of the classes had a homework assignment involving interacting with foreigners to practise their English. There were a number of groups of students crowded around older Caucasian couples asking them questions and filling out their assignment sheets. I guess there no getting away from homework?
