@sorayamajd's work incorporates visual elements from her Iranian-American identity and ancestral memory. This series, titled "Here," was inspired by an antique photo of her grandfather posing in front of a painted mural at a grandiose historic site (rather than in front of the site itself). Soraya built this set in memory of her grandmother's living room and subsequently captured her family's portraits in front of it–weaving together the physical performance of constructing the background and the stillness and isolation of being separated from one's home. See these photographs and more at @beforewewerebanned exhibition, up until August 5.
The gallery is open today (Wednesday) all day! Repost from @santafealternative - "@farhadbahram's installation 'Looking Glass' is part of the @beforewewerebanned exhibition at @east.of.west until August 5. Scultpure by @maysalbeik. Don't miss this powerful show."
Awaiting the 27th and my dad's 3 year. To mark the occassion, Texas came and went - and North Carolina and Virginia arrived. 💫 This second set of summer guests are heading out tomorrow so tonight was our weekend-on-a-Tuesday outing. · We first hit @maty_africa for #senegalese lamb, chicken, and fish and then @qahwah_house for #yemeni tea and desserts. They loved everything... because everything is amazing. 👌 I love taking people to try the best things to eat in #detroit and #michigan. (Also thinking of the #muslimban tonight and the family members of Qahwah House's owners/staff.) · There's something deeply settling to be with people you've known for years growing up. My dad's best friend is the polar opposite of my dad personality-wise - but they remained best friends from the day they met in the 1970s to when my dad passed in 2015. The little girl is a kid my sisters and I started loving on just days after she was born in 2007. My dad's absence is palpable among us... but alhamdulillah for all the relationships that serve as reminders of the strength of the bonds that he forged in life. 💛
