“What do you mean we’re going on a hike to the next post town? Don’t you mean a flight?” #littlecraneadventures #huigalone #huibegoing #nakasendotrail #kisovalley
Over the past couple of days we have been walking an ancient trail through the Japanese Alps from the Edo period (400 years ago) called the Nakasendo trail. The trail was one of the most important major roads to connect Edo (modern Tokyo) and Kyoto. The small postal towns that were layover points for the samurai and daimyo, specialised in these handmade buckwheat noodles. The buckwheat must be washed in the freshest water and also used to make the noodles. The area is abundant with mountain rivers and waterfalls, hence why they are a speciality of the region. You can either have them cold or hot - when cold they are served with a little pot of bonito and seaweed stock and soy, and you add wasabi, grated mooli and spring onions from your spice tray to taste. You dip your noodles into the pot before slurping them as loudly as possible...my slurping skills are not up to scratch! We also had the most delicious tempura made from local vegetables, some foraged. The only bit that wasn’t local was the giant prawn, which was, quite frankly, the best prawn tempura I have ever had . . . #nakasendo #kiso #kisovalley #japan #narai #soba #japanesealps #nakasendotrail
Nakasendo trail
8km hike along the Nakasendo trail, the old postal route in feudal Japan. Thankfully avoided the bears but we did see some wild monkeys, frogs and a snake...
Hiking the Nakasendo trail in Japan, where we saw monkeys, snakes and (signs for) bears.
Tsumago
During our hike we passed magome. The trail between Magome and Tsumago  is a well maintained section of the former Nakasendo, the route that ran along the Kiso Valley and connected Toyo with Kyoto during the Edo Period. From Magome to Tsumago it took us around two to three hours. #kisovalley #nakasendotrail #nakasendo #magome #posttown #magome #hiking #japan #travel #japan #traveladdict #beauty #view #awesome #lifegoals
We started the Nakasendo Trail in Nakatsugawa. Our finishing Point was a guest house in Tsumago. We walked approximately 20km mostely uphill. Nakatsugawa however, was one of the larger post-towns in the Edo period, it had a population of 1220 in the 1790s. In addition to its post-town function, Nakatsugawa was also an important local market and retail center. #nakatsugawa #nakasendotrail #hiking #tierd #awesome #speechless #view #traveladdict #travel #japan
