The little festival that could. The word “resilient” gets overused in New Orleans but in this case it’s appropriate. Bayou Boogaloo was decimated by a storm Friday night but they picked up the pieces and put it all back together on Saturday. I love the community spirit and vibe of this neighborhood festival. The festival is free but I made a donation and bought lots of food & drinks to show my support. I also got to teach a girl from Chicago how to eat crawfish so that’s always a win.
Mahalia Jackson grew up in Black Pearl, steps away from Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. At the age of 12 she was baptized in the Mississippi River by the Reverend and became a life long member of the congregation. Within these walls is where the voice of the Queen of Gospel was born.
