In the wild, orcas can swim up to 160 km per day. In captivity, orcas swim thousands of circles in a concrete tank. #emptythetanks #seaworldofhurt
Don’t strive to make your presence noticed just make your absence felt. ... Unless you’re an #orca in the #wild and a whole group of humans are waiting on the #celebritysolstice to see you. Heartbreaking news from @salishseaorcas 💔 || Meet Salish Sea orca J50 “Scarlet”. Born in December 2014, Scarlet may have entered the world with the help of two pod members “midwifing” her birth. Scars on the young orca led researchers to believe she was pulled out of her mother by fellow pod members. When Scarlet was just seven months old she stole hearts by performing over 60 breaches as her family entered the Salish Sea. Her incredible display allowed for an unprecedented number of photos, providing a solid foundation for her identity. Unfortunately, recent sightings of Scarlet show her looking emaciated, leading orca experts to suspect she may not survive. Because Scarlet has come to represent a positive future for the orcas, her loss would be especially devastating. Let’s hope she can find the chinook she needs to survive as soon as possible || Our wild orcas are dying. You can help save them. Donate or orca conservation efforts. Use your voice to raise awareness. Use biodegradable & eco-friendly cleaning supplies. Petition for government action to save these orcas & help the chinook salmon population. 🌊💙 ( Images: NOAA & Clint Rivers )

This photograph is in honour of all creatures that have given their lives in name of our greed. Let them be wild, let them be free, let us coexist. Wild Atlantic herring feeding Orca in Northern Norway. Polar night 2017-2018. I'm suffering from a moment of "cetacean deprivation" here in the peaceful French countryside. Life is often full of contradictions. I'm so very grateful being able to do the work I do, see the, often remote, places and wildlife I see. But the continuous travel, the changes in food, in time, in temperature, the instability... it wears on me at times. First world problems, I'm aware. But existing nonetheless. Being in nature and with the animals I could never be without again though. Being an ambassador for the planet that deserves our respect and care, so much more than we give her. Resources are not endless. Wildlife is struggling to survive without our interference already, but we keep compounding. #orca #killerwhale #blackfish #whale #spyhop #cetaceans #marinemammals #marinelife #whalewatching #northernnorway #arcticcircle #arctic #arctictravel #polarphotographers #imagesofnorway #oceanphotography #oceanlover #saveourseas #animalelite #wildlife #wildlifephotography #naturephotography #earthstoke #discoverearth #discoverocean #wildlifeplanet #igscwildlife #natgeowild #ocean_magazine #featured_wildlife

Southern Resident killer whales - Who are the Southern Resident killer whales? - The Southern Resident killer whales (SRKW) are a distinct group of fish-eating orcas that live in the Salish Sea and off the coast of Washington, Oregon, and California depending on the time of the year. These orcas are unique from other populations because of their diet, vocal repertoire, genetics, behavior, and culture. The whole population currently has 75 individuals and are listed as Endangered in both Canada (2001) and the U.S. (2005). - All Southern Residents belong to one clan, J clan, that consists of 3 pods, J, K and L pod with several matrilines within each pod. - J pod is the pod that is the most often seen in inland waters around Vancouver Island. J pod currently has 23 members consisting of 3 post-repoductive females, 7 reproductive females, 2 adult males, 2 sprouter males, 4 juvenile males, 2 juvenile females and 2 female and 1 male calves. K pod is the smallest pod and has 18 members consisting of 2 post-repoductive females, 5 reproductive females, 3 adult males, 6 sprouter males, 1 juvenile male and 1 juvenile female. The last calves born in K pod was born back in 2011 which is very worrying. L pod is the largest SRKW pod and has 35 members consisting of 5 post-repoductive females, 9 reproductive females, 6 adult males, 3 sprouter males, 5 juvenile males, 3 juvenile females and 3 male calves. Adult male L87 “Onyx” has been traveling with J pod since 2010. - The Southern Residents are fish-eating orcas which means that they eat exclusively fish. Their diet is mostly salmon an prefered prey is Chinook salmon which makes up 80% of their diet. The disappearance of the salmon in the Salish Sea is one of the biggest threats this population faces. They can sometimes be seen playing with harbor porpoises but have never been seen eating them. - A census for the population occurs each year and is done by the Center for Whale Research who has been documenting the SRKW since
