As a health professional in theory I know about the benefits of supportive relationships but now I really understand how beneficial they are when navigating your health. It is nearly time for the third of my colonoscopies in the last 3 months. What makes this journey easier is the support of the health care team around me. In the last 5 months the support of St.Vincents gastroenterology research team and the Austin Hospital inflammatory bowel gurus has been amazing. This has kept me calm and able to take one step at a time without getting ahead of myself and worrying about the 'what ifs'.(Thank heavens my Crohn's apart from this stricture 'hitch' is good and I am feeling well, bounding with energy as usual! 😉). I can get on with living life, fairly much as usual. To have a smiling face (the research study nurse) come and collect me as I present once again at the Day procedure unit, rather than being just another number makes the thought of having to go almost enjoyable. Having the gastroenterologist chat to you before and after the procedure and having met them previously helps you relax, making a world of difference to what otherwise is a lonely and daunting experience. . The support I have received from this team I believe is a critical component to my wellbeing. We know that excessive stress and anxiety is bad for our health and undergoing numerous medical tests and procedures often contributes to this. Having the team of health care professionals around has helped keep my stress levels down. It is so important to look after both mental and physical health. . It would fabulous if our health care system was able to provide this level of care all the time. Of course this is difficult. We know though, that any support we provide people with to help them feel empowered and cared for will help with their overall health, both physically and mentally (which work together). . As a dietitian I value even more the support I can provide my clients knowing it helps
