Days until Bama Football: Joe Namath (12) Joe Namath is one of the most influential players, not only to have played for Alabama, but in the history of football. Namath, from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, joined the Tide to play under one of the greatest coaching combinations ever in Head Coach Bear Bryant (who also wore the number 12 during his playing career at Alabama) and Offensive Coordinator Howard Schnellenberger. During his time at Alabama he went 29-4 and won a National Championship in 1964. Bear Bryant called him “the greatest athlete I ever coached”. Namath was phenomenal at Alabama but his legacy was made in the pro game. After his time with the Tide, Namath would be drafted in the first round of the AFL and NFL draft but would end up choosing to play for the AFL’s New York Jets. In 1966, the AFL and NFL merged and decided to play a joint “Super Bowl” to decide the Championship. Through the first 2 season the NFL had dominated the AFL by 25 and 19 points in the first 2 Super Bowls and all hope looked lost for the AFL. That all changed in Super Bowl III when Joe Namath led the Jets to an AFL Championship and a chance to play the Baltimore Colts in the Super Bowl. The Colts were 18 point favorites and it looked to many that this game would just be another blowout. But against all odds, Namath led the Jets to a 16-7 Super Bowl victory, proving the AFL could hang with the big boys and completely changing the landscape of pro football. Namath would play 12 years in New York, winning countless awards (too many to name) and in 1985 he was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Although he will be forever remembered in New York, Broadway Joe hasn’t forgot his roots and once or twice a season, you’ll see him roaming the sideline of Bryant-Denny with one of his trademark fur coats. Roll Tide forever, Joe Namath!
