Bolsheviks suppress it.  And respond with New Economic Policy to kick-start economy.  In the mixed economy, a new class of rich peasants is encouraged to profit by selling grain. This will feed the cities and open empty factories. Kulaks then buy the products (Perhaps porcelain)■ ○ ⚪1922⚫Ilya moves to St Petersburg with Malevich and others. Funding for the Vitebsk school is ended■ ○ ⚪03/07/1923⚫Chashnik is officially taken on to work at the State Porcelain Factory, creating fantastic Suprematist designs. Mostly for state bodies and to earn important foriegn currency■ ○ 🔴1923🔴Trotsky writes about the problems of the Soviet state following 7 years of wars, with the need to fix roads and to rebuild the working class base of the revolution. A suprematist composition out of buildings. Not that Suetin would’ve given me thumbs-up, but my paint is harder to arrange . ⚫⚪🔴🔵 Николай Суетин NIKOLAI SUETIN /1897-1954 SUPREMATISM /1920-21 ⚫⚪🔴🔵⚫⚪🔴🔵⚫⚪🔴🔵⚫⚪🔴🔵⚫⚪ ■1■RED VITEBSK■Attended Vitebsk People's Art School from 1918-1922. Initially under the leadership of Marc Chagall. The art school was open to all supporting the revolution. It was a shining beacon of the new besieged Worker's State. The school was housed in a former mansion of a local factory owner. Classes were available all day long. Red Army soldiers arrived with their guns, took lessons with guns at their sides. Then went back to the Civil War front. ⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪ ■2■SUPREMATISM■Nikolai quickly fell under the influence of polemical artist, Kazimir Malevich, with his inspirational teaching and abstract art theory. Nikolai adopted Kazimir's Suprematist style, in painting and then into everyday life in the 1920s. ⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪ ■3■TROIKA■Became a key member of the Suprematist trioka with Malevich and Ilya Chasnik at UNOVIS in Vitebsk. And when they left for St Petersburg together in 1922. The troika has been overplayed in some writing, especially when we consider the role of other Suprematist innovators. For example, Lazar Khidekel's important role in architecture. Lazar also followed Malevich to St Petersburg from Vitebsk. ⚫⚪🔴🔵⚫⚪🔴🔵⚫⚪🔴🔵⚫⚪🔴🔵⚫⚪ #suprematism #unovis #malevich #leningrad #stpetersburg #vitebsk #madrid #russia #belarus #sovietunion #russianavantgarde #vitebsk #НиколайСуетин #marcchagall #chagall #nikolaisuetin #suetin #Суетин
SHAPING MODERNITY When Stalin came to power, following the death of Lenin, the new regime imposed ideological restrictions on artists halting the period of inventiveness that characterised Russian art just before and just after the Revolution. The avante-garde movement that had been at the forefront of the Revolution, believing in breaking ties with the old and building a new modern world, found themselves on the fringe. Stalin wanted unity, and a vanguard who thought creatively posed a threat. The new regime forced many artists to move towards a new form of socialist realism with subjects strictly regulated through state commissions. Nikolai Suetin and Ilya Chashnik, students of Kazimir Malevitch, managed to carry on the Suprematist tradition as ceramics painters. At a time when there was no money and no materials available, this is the only place where they could continue to pursue suprematist design applying avante-garde patterns and artworks to porcelain from early 1920s until quite late into 1930s — partly, because there was more leeway in decorative arts. Nikolai Suetin would go on to become the Chief Artist at the Lomonosov State Porcelain Factory in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) in 1932. A few of the works can still be found at auctions. If you would like to know more about the Russian avante-garde movement, I cannot recommend enough a brilliant documentary film by Margy Kinmonth @margy_kinmonth REVOLUTION — NEW ART FOR A NEW WORLD available on Foxtrot Films. It was a major inspiration for the 2_Squares collection after I saw it at an @icalondon screening. #russianart #revolutionaryart #avantegarde #radicalart #abstract #noire #noirlovers #suprematism #malevitch #suetin #abstract #porcelain #finebonechina #ceramics #antiques #auctions #sovietporcelain #decorativeart #modernism #moodboard #inspiration #documentary #newartforanewworld #foxtrotfilms #indie #fashion #design #label #fashionlabel #fashionstartup
