So why is Golden Boy Promotions saying they are moving on from the rematch between their client, Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, and unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin? While Golden Boy feels this now a dead issue, promoter Tom Loeffler of GGG Promotions believes they are still negotiating the rematch for September. Loeffler told BoxingScene.com - "I'm discussing it with Eric (Gomez, president of Golden Boy), Gennady took a stance because of the situation, he wants a more equitable split. It was pretty one-sided towards Canelo and it's clear the only reason the May 5 fight didn't happen is because Canelo tested positive for two tests." "So Gennady's the champion and he did make a lot of concessions to make the first fight. He made a lot of concessions to get the rematch and now that he's had some time to think about it after the May 5th fight, he feels that if should be a more equitable split." It's expected that Alvarez will return to the ring on September 15th. But it's also clear that Golovkin wants a bigger slice of the financial pie the second time around. "That's what I expressed to Eric and we'll see if there's a way to get it done. Look, when Canelo fought Cotto - when he was only the WBC champion, Gennady had two titles - they gave [Cotto] the majority of the split," Loeffler explained. "They gave [Cotto] 55-percent and for Gennady to take a much lower percentage than Cotto's getting... Gennady feels now with the IBF (title) in jeopardy because the May 5 fight didn't happen, having to endure the meeting over there with the IBF, he feels the time that's gone by now, where we could be talking about a different fight than the Canelo fight, he feels that it should be more equitable." Loeffler then pointed out - "especially with the numbers the first fight did. We more than doubled the gate of Cotto-Canelo, we did about a half-million more (pay-per-view) buys than Cotto-Canelo. So Gennady feels he deserves a more fair split in light of the fight having
It's clear that there is an impasse as it relates to the negotiations between unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 KOs) and Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs). The two boxers fought to a controversial twelve round split draw in September 2017 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The two sides had been negotiating the terms for the rematch, targeted for September 15th - which is when Canelo plans to return. According to Canelo's promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, Golovkin is balking at the fight for whatever reason. And with that, they say they have begun to reach out to other middleweights - such as Daniel Jacobs and Billy Joe Saunders - looking for a new dance partner to face Canelo in his planned return. "We have reached out to Eddie Hearn (who promotes Jacobs), we're going to talk to him later today. I spoke with Frank Warren (who represents Saunders, the WBO titlist), those two are right there," said Eric Gomez, the president of Golden Boy, to BoxingScene.com. "I spoke with (Spike) O'Sullivan's guy, he's interested. We haven't reached out to (Jermall) Charlo but we'll reach out to him, as well." The founder of Golden Boy, Oscar De La Hoya, stated to BoxingScene - "(Golovkin's) going to make the biggest payday of his life and he's out there dealing with the IBF, a mandatory (Sergey Derevyanchenko) who's 11-0. Go ahead and fight him for a million dollars, fine. So we're not waiting for Golovkin anymore." "They've had the contract for six weeks so it makes no sense," added De La Hoya. "We've gone through everything to try to make this fight, Look, 'Canelo' did the VADA testing, the commission even tested before VADA, did the hair follicle test. What else do we have to do?" THE DROP - Repost from @thaboxingvoice - TOM LOEFFLER RESPONDS TO GOLDEN BOY: Via LA TIMES "There's a lot of things Gennady is looking at that convince him he needs a more equitable split. He's the champion. He's not asking for more. He just wants it to be more equitable, and it's my job and Eric's job to see if we can figure it out." "I understand Canelo's position … he's looking to fight someone a lot easier than GGG [Golovkin] in September, and I think that's why they're not looking to negotiate a more fair deal with GGG," Loeffler said. Walking away from Golovkin is a risky move for Alvarez, who's already stained by the positive tests and was seen as receiving at least one — if not two — preferential scorecards to gain last year's draw in Nevada. "It's clear Canelo waited until he got to the point he believed he could beat Gennady. He couldn't beat him. If Canelo was confident in the fight, he wouldn't have a problem negotiating a more fair split." "Nobody can suggest GGG is afraid of fighting anybody. … The only reason we're having this discussion right now is because Canelo failed two drug tests," Loeffler said. "If he hadn't, we would've had the biggest event in boxing. That situation created the postponement, and now Gennady wants more fair terms — to be compensated fairly — in the biggest fight for boxing. "We had the third biggest gate in boxing ($27 million) and it wasn't only because of Canelo." #caneloggg2 #caneloalvarez #canelo #gennadygolovkin #ggg #kazakhstan #boxing #boxeo Photo Credit: @marat_zhuldaspaev Repost credit: @latimes @supremeboxing Follow us: @thaboxingvoice #thaboxingvoice #voiceofthepeople #tbvpodcast🎧 #tbv
The planned fall rematch between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin is now looking less likely to take place. The two sides have been negotiating the terms of the rematch for this coming September - but Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya, who promotes Canelo, is claiming that he was advised that Golovkin rejected the rematch. “It’s clear to us that Golovkin doesn’t want to fight Canelo,” De La Hoya said to Mike Coppinger of The Ring. “It’s clear to us that after all the demands that they made, after Canelo having to do the hair follicle test, having to enroll in VADA, having to be tested by the Nevada State Athletic Commission randomly even before he was enrolled in VADA, it’s clear that GGG is afraid." “So we’re going to move on and I’m going to start making phone calls to (Daniel Jacobs’) people, to (Billy Joe) Saunders’ people, start making calls to (Jermall) Charlo and (Spike) O’Sullivan. (Golovkin's promoter Tom Loeffler told me GGG) doesn’t want to fight. That’s all Tom said. They’re not going have a better deal than what they have now.” Tom Loeffler denied De La Hoya's version of the story when contacted by Coppinger. According to Loeffler, he requested a better deal for his boxer - which De La Hoya rejected. “If they want to go in a different direction, they’re entitled to, but I think that speaks more to Canelo,” Loeffler said. “GGG is not afraid to fight anybody in the middleweight division. He made a lot of (financial) sacrifices for the first fight and the rematch. And since the rematch was cancelled he wants a more equitable percentage." Earlier this month, middleweight contender Saul "Canelo" Alvarez was pulled from the WBC's rankings - because of his refusal to enter their Clean Boxing Program - which is run by drug testing agency VADA [Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency]. WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman has revealed that Canelo will return to his organization's rankings in the month of June - after Canelo recently signed up with VADA for a year-round drug testing protocol. Canelo has been under fire since the month of March, after it was revealed that he tested positive for the banned substance clenbuterol in a pair of tests taken in February. The Mexican superstar was going to fight WBC, IBF, WBA, IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin on May 5 - but the contest fell out after Canelo was hit with a six month suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. "Already (Canelo) will return to the rankings in June. That's the regulation, if you're a part of VADA for the out-of-competition tests, you can be ranked. If you're not (in VADA), you can not be ranked, it's simple consistency," said Sulaiman to ESPN Deportes. "Being enrolled in this program a positive step of clarity. It is clear and conclusive that he is intending to be a clean boxer, to be available 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, seven days a week - because you can get tested at any time." Canelo will be capable of fighting by mid-August. He hopes to face Golovkin in a rematch on September 15th, as part of Mexican Independence Day weekend. They fought last September to a controversial twelve round draw at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Golovkin returned to the ring on May 5 as planned, at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. In an HBO televised main event, he scored an easy two round knockout of junior middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan. As reported on Tuesday on BoxingScene.com, former world chamion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez has signed up for year-round testing with the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) after losing his WBC ranking. WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman this week said Alvarez was removed from their middleweight rankings after "he refused to sign up for the clean boxing programme as stated in the rules", but the 27-year-old has now agreed to regular testing. Alvarez will be looking to reschedule a fight with WBC, IBO, WBA, IBF middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin on his return, having been forced to postpone their May 5 Las Vegas bout. The first meeting between the pair ended in a controversial draw last September. Canelo is now motivated to bounce back from the drug testing controversy. "I always knew what I was and what I am, I cooperated and I said I would do anything to show that I am clean. With the hair test, everything was put on the table and I wish more boxers would follow my path.... demonstrating based on actions so that my image as a full fighter is not tainted," Canelo told Enrique Sanchez. "I am living a new stage in which I am learning a lot and maturing, this has been more complicated than when I lost against Floyd Mayweather, without a doubt, because in that situation I fought, and here I could only defend myself with my tests. This has made me grow a lot." "In September, I'm going to return to fight, that's my goal, to return to the ring is the most important thing, and from now on I think it's a new stage for my life. Whenever they ask me 'what was your most difficult year,' I think this has been one of the most difficult, but this will make me much stronger." On Tuesday, Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) announced that he enrolled in year-round testing with VADA (Voluntary Anti-Doping Association). While Canelo was firm that his positive tests were a direct result of ingesting contaminated meat in Mexico - the Nevada State Athletic Commission still suspended him for six months. Because of the positive tests, Canelo's scheduled rematch with IBF, IBO, WBC, WBA middleweight Gennady Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 KOs) fell apart. It was set to take place on May 5th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Canelo will return to the ring on September 15th, as part of Mexican Independence Day weekend, and the rematch with Golovkin is the first choice on his list. “I think it’s the right thing to do, especially for someone who has been proclaiming his innocence,” Loeffler said to Yahoo Sports. “Gennady has been clear that he would have no problem continuing to be tested through the fight in September, and he expected the same from Canelo, so this is a step in the right direction." “It would have been a requirement [to make the fight], but they never balked at doing it. It was a matter of when it would start. When he said he’d start testing when the contract was signed, that raised a few flags, but really, if he’s being tested now, there are no issues. This was a good step.” News Credit: Boxing Scene #gennadygolovkin #tomloeffler #k2promotions #caneloalvarez #oscardelahoya #goldenboyboxing #hboppv #mexicanstyle #mexicanboxing #canelogolovkin2

Gennady Golovkin and his handlers want to know when Canelo Alvarez will resume testing for performance-enhancing drugs. They slammed the suspended superstar before and after Golovkin’s second-round knockout of Vanes Martirosyan on Saturday night because Alvarez hasn’t been tested for PEDs since his temporary suspension was extended to six months by the Nevada State Athletic Commission on April 18. Golovkin and his trainer, Abel Sanchez, have been very vocal about Alvarez’s need to begin proving he is a clean boxer by re-enrolling in the WBC’s “Clean Boxing Program” as soon as possible. According to Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez, Alvarez is willing to partake in as many blood and urine tests as necessary as soon as contracts are signed for their middleweight championship rematch. Alvarez wants to reschedule their second fight for September 15, the date the former two-division champion announced last month that he’ll return to the ring. “If we have a deal done, he’ll start when the contracts get signed,” Gomez told BoxingScene.com on Wednesday during a press event for the Sadam Ali-Jaime Munguia fight Saturday night in Verona, New York. “If that’s what they want, we’ll do it like that. Canelo has no problem doing that. We went above and beyond to prove that this is an accident. So all the proper protocols will be in place. There are no issues there.” Gomez downplayed the testing controversy and stressed that it won’t impact negotiations for their rematch. “Look, all that testing stuff, he’s gonna do what he always does,” Gomez said. “He always tests for every fight. Look at his history. He’s gonna continue to test for the rest of his career. All the proper protocols will be in place for all of his fights, so that’s no issue at all.” News Credit:Boxing Scene #gennadygolovkin #tomloeffler #k2promotions #caneloalvarez #oscardelahoya #goldenboyboxing #hboppv #mexicanstyle #mexicanboxing #canelogolovkin2

Vanes Martirosyan at least tried Saturday night, but he lasted just about as long as Gennady Golovkin’s last hopeless opponent at StubHub Center. Golovkin viciously assaulted Martirosyan and knocked him out in the second round of a scheduled 12-round middleweight title fight that was every bit as easy for him as the lopsided odds suggested it would be. Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 KOs) hurt Martirosyan with a right uppercut early in the second round, followed it with an overhand right to the side of his head, two stiff jabs and another flush, straight right, before landing a crushing left hook that knocked down Martirosyan for the first time in his 13-year pro career. A devastated Martirosyan tried to get up, but he couldn’t reach his feet before referee Jack Reis counted to 10. The official time of the stoppage was 1:53 of the second round, when much of the announced crowd of 7,837 erupted. “It feels great to get a knockout,” Golovkin said. “Vanes is a very good fighter. He caught me a few times in the first round. In the second round, I came out all business, after I felt him out in the first round.” Golovkin tied Bernard Hopkins’ middleweight record by making a 20th straight defense of the WBA 160-pound championship he won in August 2010. Kazakhstan’s Golovkin, who resides in Santa Monica, California, also defended his WBC and IBO championships. The 36-year-old Golovkin also owns the IBF title, but the IBF declined to sanction Golovkin-Martirosyan as a title fight. Golovkin fought at StubHub Center for the first time since he knocked out Mexico’s Marco Antonio Rubio in the second round of their October 2014 bout. Rubio offered little resistance that night. Martirosyan (36-4-1, 21 KOs), of nearby Glendale, California, lost by knockout for the first time. Gennady Golovkin is looking forward to Saturday's showdown with Vanes Martirosyan after acknowledging going the distance is not good for a boxer. Golovkin's new opponent following Alvarez's ban was only announced on April 18, but the 36-year-old says the quick turnaround is part and parcel of boxing. It's become a boxing tradition to stage a big event on the weekend of Cinco De Mayo. Tom Loeffler, promoter for Golovkin, says the fight with Vanes was the prefect solution to save the Cinco De Mayo date for the fans. "This is a very unique situation not only on the promotional side but also on the training side.  Luckily Abel runs a very professional training camp. Gennady is real disciplined.  It was really me working the late nights worrying and trying to figure out a solution on how we would save the date," Loeffler said. "Gennady just kept training and sparring and he’s focused but he was frustrated when Canelo first announced the positive test.  He was extremely frustrated and disappointed when people were saying why this fight wasn’t happening in Las Vegas – Gennady was the person most affected by this because he had been training for the biggest fight in the sport of boxing then it was a big shock wave that came with the test." "He is a professional and he wants to fight and if he is successful on Saturday he’ll tie the middleweight record that Bernard Hopkins set at 20 defenses and it is a very momentous occasion for his career.  He is giving Vanes a huge opportunity – one of the biggest platforms that Vanes will be performing on HBO against arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the sport. " "This is a huge opportunity for Vanes being extremely frustrated for not getting a fight for over two years now on the biggest stage in his hometown no less – it was the solution to save the Cinco de Mayo date for the fans."
