Winter blues or Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D), is a type of depression that usually appears during the cold and gloomy winter months. . It is believed to be linked to the reduced exposure to sunlight during the shorter days of the year which happen during the winter season. The natural light we receive through our eyes has an effect on our moods, sleep, appetite, temperature as well as our sex drive and lack of it can be disruptive to our system. . During the hours of darkness the pineal gland produces a chemical called melatonin which makes us feel drowsy and signals the time for bed - hence we’re walking around feeling sleepish and sluggish at this time of the year. Heck! Even the trees and plants hibernate in winter! . S.A.D is often treated with light therapy, it is also recommended that we absorb as much natural daylight as possible, which ideally should be between one and two hours a day. And then of course there are essential oils which can influence the limbic system, which is the area of the brain responsible for controlling our moods. . Citrus oils are are uplifting, energising and cheerful, and are some of the best essential oils to relieve the winter doldrums and most people enjoy their scents. .
